Jack Grassby was born in South Shields in 1925 and has lived and worked on Tyneside apart from a period of service in the Royal Navy.

He studied electrical engineering at the then Sunderland College of Durham University and worked for several years in the electronics industry. He taught for some 25 years in the local colleges of further and higher education.

He served on many trade union and education bodies at local and national level and was, for seven years, a member of the national executive of his professional union.

From 1964 to 1969 he was secretary of the joint South Shields Labour Party and Trades Union Council.

On his retirement in 1988 he took up art and has had several solo exhibitions. His latest work is a form of conceptual art based on quantum physics.
