TUPS Books is the publishing department of Trade Union Printing Services Ltd. founded by redundant miners and shipyard workers.
TUPS Books first began publishing in 1994, the year when all the deep mine collieries in County Durham and all but two in Northumberland were closed. Our first book, The Collieries of Northumberland Vol. 1, was a record in text and photographs of 26 of the mines of the Northumberland coalfield. This was followed by the Collieries of Durham Vol. 1. A second volume of both these books are now in print. In five years we have published a total of 15 books and we are now regarded as one of the major publishers of local, and social history in the North East of England. In 1998 we took over the book stock of Bewick Press and now distribute their titles. We will be publishing five new books before the end of 1999.
As well as publishing our own titles we have been instrumental in helping authors publish their own work. We offer a free advice service, and a fair deal for anyone who wishes to publish a book.
The Old Mill
TUPS operates from the Old Mill, 30 Lime Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, a mid-nineteenth century, seven-story, warehouse that was formally a flax mill. The Old Mill was for many years derelict and was in a very bad state of repair. With the help of voluntary labour three floors are now in use. There are plans to form an Industrial Provident Society to complete the renovation of The Old Mill and create a multipurpose resource centre for the community founded on self help, education and training. Amongst the projects proposed are, the creation of a multimedia training centre, a small boat yard, artists studios, local history archive and a writers work shop.
TUPS Books is particularly interested in making available the skills they have learned in the writing, production and marketing of books based on social history. The development of this project has been financed entirely by the printing and publishing operation but it is hoped to attract support from other funding bodies.
